An Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a facility where independent networks interconnect and exchange internet traffic through shared switching infrastructure using standard protocols. IXPs reduce routing inefficiencies, lower latency, and improve network resilience by creating direct paths between networks instead of relying on distant upstream providers.
Today, the U.S. has fewer than 10,000 such junctions, leaving the internet vulnerable to bottlenecks and single points of failure. This distributed architecture would ensure continuous data flow under all conditions and support the geographic spread of critical network functions across hardened sites.
