Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911) is an IP-based emergency communications framework that replaces legacy circuit-switched 9-1-1 systems with secure, broadband-enabled networks capable of transmitting voice, text, images, video, and real-time data between the public and emergency response agencies. NG911 systems rely on high-capacity fiber infrastructure, cloud-based routing, and interoperable standards to improve call handling, location accuracy, and situational awareness for public safety answering points (PSAPs).

Broadband infrastructure deployed through the BEAD Program directly enables NG911 modernization by providing the resilient, low-latency fiber connectivity required to support next-generation emergency services. BEAD-funded networks strengthen NG911 by improving rural and underserved area connectivity, enabling redundancy and geographic diversity for emergency networks, and supporting integration with public safety, transportation, and disaster response systems critical to national resilience.
